Youth Orchestra of Bucks County Shifts to Innovative, Virtual Fall Programming

Even a historic pandemic can’t silence the passionate and talented members of the Youth Orchestra of Bucks County (YOBC). “While we can’t play in the same room together this fall, I’m thrilled that we can still build new skills together virtually,” says YOBC Executive Director Erica Cherry.

More than simply shifting its existing programs to a virtual format, however, YOBC spent months coming up with educational programming designed specifically for an online environment. It developed mini-courses in such areas as practice strategies and tips for tackling new music, and it partnered with two leading music organizations, Collective Conservatory and Project 440, to provide additional, immersive courses. “In developing new programs, we tried to keep in mind what is at the heart of YOBC programming—collaboration and community,” says Cherry.

The result is a creative smorgasbord of online offerings, including classes on improving performance skills and composing an original work, practicing social entrepreneurship through developing small group, community-based artistic projects, and preparing for college and the audition process. One class features a different guest artist every week, including such nationally recognized music educators as Daniel Trahey, co-creator of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s “OrchKids” program, and Joseph Young, conductor of the National Youth Orchestra USA.

Student musicians will also meet virtually twice during the semester with their ensemble groups and continue practicing their repertoire with the intention of resuming in-person rehearsals in the new year.

Founded in 1991, YOBC serves 230 to 250 students in 13 ensembles, including its flagship Symphony Orchestra. Fall enrollment is still open, and string, woodwind, brass and percussion students at all levels of playing are invited to audition.
